Fun on eBay.

Recently I've been having fun on eBay - experimenting and learning the best way to bid and winning quite a bit (my feedback is now at 5!). I you like to snipe, but can't be bothered sitting around waiting for an auction to close, try this website: Gixen:

My Seven Children

Today I gave a short (6:39) talk at our Toastmasters (public speaking improvement) group at work about Kallaroo Youth Group. It was really good (and scary) to be able to talk about Jesus at work. Toastmasters is a really great thing to do because it allows you to be quite explicit about the gospel but in a way that is indirect, non-threatening and socially acceptable. After the talk you are evaluated on how well you talked, not what you talked about. Some people talk about very different stuff (new age beliefs, alternative theories on medicine etc. ...) stuff so it was acceptable (and a good opportunity) to talk about Jesus.

If you are interested in listening to my talk, it's <here>.

What's been happening

Well, a lot has happened since I last wrote anything on this blog!

So, here's the quick list:
  • Jessie and I went to Adelaide to see Dad's side of the family
  • I started work at GHD
  • I turned 23
  • Jessie and I bought a block of land
  • I took a flying trial
  • I took a work trip to Geraldton
  • Jessie and I went to the GHD Ball
  • My sister went to Africa to train as a missionary
  • My parents went on a trip to Europe

Adelaide: 23rd December - 7th Jan 2006

Drove over to Adelaide with my parents and Jessie. Lots of good fun was had catching up with family. Also lots of Kangaroos on the way.

GHD: 6th Feb

Started working as an enga-ma-neer! I now get paid to work. It's pretty good, I get to work on lots of different projects. Getting up every day to work is hard. I apreciate weekends and public holidays so much now!

23

I turned 23! I'm almost oldish now.

Land Ahoy!

Jessie and I bought a block of land in Hocking, which is a long way away to the north. Just go off Ocean Reef road to the east, then north up Wanneroo Road a bit, then a few more roads and you're there! It's great to be into the property market before it becomes unaffordable. We are building a house as soon as we can and plan to be in by the end of March.

Flying trial

I flew a plane! It was great! I did 60% of the landing by myself! I actually got to fly most of the time - the pilot (who's name, funnily enough, was Jet!) just did corrections here and there! It was great fun, although it's an expensive hobby so I don't think I'll be doing it much more...

Geraldton

I went on my first business trip site visit to Geraldton. Unfortunately, I missed the plane by 3 minutes! Who would have thought how easy it is to set the alarm for 5:00pm instead of 5:00am!! Anyway I eventually got there and did some amount of work there before flying back the same day. Whoops.

Also I managed to get onto the roof of the SkyWest building very easily using a stairwell with no signs advising me that it was illegal. I could have planted a bomb - in fact I did leave my suitcase behind for about 10 seconds (see photos). Also I took spy photos of the planes - thinking that someone would come and arrest me but no one has so far...

GHD Ball

WOW! This was fabulous! So much effort put in, and it didn't cost Jessie or I anything! Have a look at the photos! It was a circus theme, and they had stages and acrobats and revolving centrepieces and sideshow alley with fairy floss and pop guns and strong men and midgets and everything! I won Jessie a soft plush toy by putting balls into a clowns mouth - except she made me give it away because she believes her Mum's lies that soft toys from the carnival are made from old hospital rags!... that woman has a lot to answer for.

Kerryn

My sister left on the 30th of June this year for Africa! She is doing some missionary training with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) before doing some missionary practice.

Parents

My parents just left for a trip to Europe. This is about 23 years overdue... yes, 23 years... my age... because I was the surprise that came along and changed their pre-children travel plans! Oh well, better late than never. Also now Jessie and I can use their house as a holiday weekend retreat - it'll be good to have some open space after living in these units for the past 1 1/2 years.

Oh well, that's all for now. Hope you liked it. Here are some sample photos - there are more in the photo albums...

I'm on holidays!

Well hi again eveyone!

This blog was only meant to be a holday blog - seeing as I'm usually much too busy for this sort of idle espistling. However, I've been encouraged to keep writing by my little sister - who, like me, is now on a massive holiday!

That's right, I've handed in my final year thesis, done my very last exams and cleared out my junk in the final year lab - I'm on holidays!

Ive got a full-time enga-ma-neering job lined up with GHD (www.ghd.com.au), but I don't start until Feb the 6th next year! So until then, it's holiday city...

Of course, I do have a few things planned in the meantime.
  1. Road trip to Adelaide from the 23rd December this year to the 7th of Jan next year with my wife and parents to see Dad's side of the family for Christmas
  2. Cleaning and tidying up this units of ours. Sure it's small, but it can get messy when you leave it for a while.

But apart from that, I'm basically free!

I apologise for being such a hermit this year, what with being just married and having a thesis to work on, my time was pretty much taken up! So, feel free to get in contact with me if you'd like to catch up! I'd love to hear from you!

Oh well, until then...

First day of work

Well, my first day of real work started today!

Got to uni early, but everything wasn't set up for me! It took an entire day to properly set up the pendulum and get it working correctly with all the measurement apparatus! I was a bit dissapointed - I mean they did have a while to prepare for my coming! However, the pendulum was set up differently for another student just before me. So I suppose that's OK.

We managed to test two posts today. TWO POSTS! And a small stick as a test. Two posts and a stick, that's disgraceful! Only 48 more to go and I leave at 7:50pm tomorrow night. We're going to try and go like the clappers tomorrow, and see what we can get done. If some posts remain undone, they will have to test them for me after I'm gone. So at least they'll get done, but I won't be able to see them.

Plus one of the companies delivered the wrong posts. They are bringing replacements tomorrow. Can't people do things right in Sydney or something? ;)

I've attached some photos of my destructive efforts.

I was a full-on day, basically spending the entire day in the lab, taking a 20 minute break for lunch at 3! But it was great - I had so much responsibilty - 5 or more lab guys doing things for me, moving large blocks of concrete, lifting posts, welding things, hoisting things, breaking things, it was great! Very cool

Oh well, I'd better go and analyse some of the results. All 2 of them.

Ecch. Oh well, please pray that we get more done tomorrow.

Hope things are working in Perth.

Home tomorrow!

PK :)

Exploration day

Slept in nicely, only rising at 11.  Bit of a waste of a foreign city, bit I think it was worth it.

Had a very unhealthy but fun breakfast of bacon, eggs tomatos and coco pops. Oh well, what are holidays for!

Again on the theme of adventure, I decided to catch a bus into what I hoped would be the city centre. It worked and soon I was walking around circular quay, soaking up the heady atmosphere of national landmarks and street theatre.

Sydney is expensive, and tourist traps were everywhere. But I managed to find a little yellow taxi boat that took me around the harbour for 40 mins for only $25. Good views of the bridge and the house de opera were to be had all round (see photos again). Also saw many nice bayside apartments that I think I'll pick up oneday when I have a spare million or two. Then again, why not take Russell Crowe's house for 10?

Found the pool, and the spa. Mmmmm, what are business trips for, anyway.

Went to the shops, which are open everyday till late. Sure, it's convenient, but really it makes the city a very busy place to live. I'm not sure if I'd want it like that constantly, so I'm glad we don't have it in Perth for now.

Went to St. Barnabus church tonight, which is right next to UniLodge. It was really nice, the people were warm and welcoming. There are lots of young people there because it's so near the uni. Also I found out that our minister, Gordon, did his training here some time long ago! It really is a small world.

Well, so far it's been fun and I'm enjoying myself. One one hand, I'm missing my lovely wife and doing things together . But on the other, it's good to get away on one's self sometimes.

Oh well, I'd better go and get some sleep, tomorrow will be filled with ... work... of all things.

Hope you are all well and happy in the best city in Australia.

Publicly Funded Research Adventure

Well I'm here in Syndey for my first ever Publicly Funded Research Adventure...

... Let me explain. As part of my final year project at uni, I'm doing some testing at the Univeristy of Sydney. Hence I am currently being put-up at the tax-payers' expense!

I call it an adventure because I'm here on my own and finding my way around a much bigger city than Perth.

I've never had time for a writing a blog before, but seeing as I'm here I may as well start now. I'll keep it succinct and hopefully interesting.

To this end I will leave out the flight - I had an aisle seat and there were lots of clouds. Landing in Sydney at night is pretty though.

After accidentally waiting for 5 mins at the wrong luggage carousel, the thought occured to be that I'd better kick my brain into a higher gear if I was going to survive in ths big, nasty agglomeration of a city.

Another reason that this is an adventure is that I'd managed to leave Perth without actually confirming how much of my food and travel expenses were being covered by Main Roads. Presumably most of it will be, but I decided not to ring up any dubious expenses just to be sure.

Partly because of this, but mostly because I wanted some adventure, I decided against catching a taxi to the hotel. Thinking that some public transport was worth a try, I wandered towards the big sign that said "Trains", thinking this may prove helpful. Understandably it was, and 10 minutes later I was on a train heading towards Central station. Everything about Sydney is bigger than Perth. Their trains are double decker! They have many more tracks than Perth's reassuringly simple four, and hence thier central station is very large and confusing. But eventually I managed to find a train heading for Redfern.

Sydney is also much older and dirtier than Perth. Perhaps one leads to the other, but something that wasn't helping the squalour of the place was the distinct lack of bins! Bins are really hard to find! So presumably that's why everyone just drops their rubbish in the street/train station/cesspit.

Anyway I then walked about a kay through the streets of Redfern and Camperdown. Walking through Syndey at night with a large wheely suitcase is an interesting adventure. But I survived, making it to the Hotel UniLodge Sydney! (see the photos section of this site).

I have a nice, clean, small room which I am quite happy with. It's fun to be here, though it really makes me appreciate what we have in Perth. It beats Sydney anyday!

PK:)
